Vibrant ruby colour with bright clarity, vivid aromas of dark fruit and spices with floral nuances, notes of blackberry, raspberry, cassis and violets with spicy black pepper, intense berry flavours on the palate giving the wine a soft fullness balanced by fresh acidity and smooth tannins with a peppery finish.
Food Pairings: Given the wines vibrant character, it would pair well with rich flavours such as sauces and marinates. However, the dish should not be too heavy as to not overpower the soft mouthfeel of the wine. Some suggestions include spaghetti alla bolognese, glazed pork tenderloin or BBQ ribs.
Cantina Vignaioli Scansano is a cooperative winery in the Maremma region of Tuscany, Italy. It was founded in 1972 and since then has been focused on creating high-quality wines that reflect the territory including Morellino di Scansano DOCG from Sangiovese and Alicante grapes, as well as a red wine from Ciliegiolo and a white from Trebbiano and Chardonnay. Their vineyards are over 700 hectares on the hills of Scansano with about 300 hectares for each member. These small plots enable members to grow the grapes with attentiveness and care before they are selected in the winery and fermented separately for the base wine.
The costal area of Maremma was once a swampland with a few villages, such as Scansano, on the hill tops. It wasn’t until the 50’s that the land was reclaimed and its potential for creating wines of personality and character was discovered. The hot, dry climate mitigated by the nearby sea together with a mix of sandy, silt and clay soils are ideal conditions for the Sangiovese grape, known locally as “Morellino”, producing potent, fruit forward wines characterised by aromas of forest fruit, cherry, plum and spices. The name “Morellino” is believed to be inspired by the “Morelli” (black horses) traditionally ridden by “butteri” (local cowboys).
